ARC/GNY wiki dev site

In the spirit of “making is thinking”, I decided to go ahead and set up a development site for an internal RC wiki. While discussions with ARC/GNY tech people might prove the wiki to be an inappropriate format for what I’m suggesting, I thought some hands-on research with the technology would further my understanding of some of the issues at stake.

Currently the main page of the wiki has a link to a listing of training manuals. When you click on that link, you’ll see one manual article: ARC/GNY Responder-DAT Study Guide. I started porting this document from the hard copy I have to the dev wiki. (This is the doc I referred to in my midterm presentation.)

I do have some initial thoughts/questions on using MediaWiki for this purpose.

  • Will the formatting/layout capabilities be robust enough?
  • How will the skills overhead required for editing the wiki be received?
  • The fact that each wiki article has a history of edits (versioning) built in is pretty great

I plan on doing some further research into the potentials of MediaWiki templates as well as modifying the CSS for print versions.

This is shaping up nicely and its great that you started with content that isn’t easily accessible for responders but is very important to their work. How are transferring the text? You’re not transcribing it yourself, are you?

Oh, yes, I have been transcribing it myself. I’ve never had much luck with OCR and even if I did I think this doc might send it for a loop. I’ll be adding images too to test different ways that those can be handled.
